JOLIET, Ill. (AP) – Officials say one inmate from Stateville Correctional Center is being treated for Legionnaire’s disease at an outside hospital.

Illinois Department of Corrections spokeswoman Nicole Wilson says it’s an isolated case. No other inmates at the facility have experienced symptoms associated with the disease and the infected inmate’s cellmate has tested negative.

Wilson says the department is working to identify the source and has started sanitizing potential areas of concern.

The case comes as New York City is dealing with its largest-ever outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease. The South Bronx cluster has killed 12 people and sickened more than 100 others.

The illness is caused when water tainted with Legionella bacteria is inhaled into the lungs. It’s considered particularly dangerous for the elderly and for people with underlying health issues.
