SPRINGFIELD — On a 35-15 party line vote Wednesday night, the Illinois Senate voted to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of a measure designed to ban a union strike or a government lockout in the event of an impasse, and would send labor-union contract decisions to an unelected arbitrator.

On Tuesday Rauner sent a memo to Illinois lawmakers imploring them not to overturn his dismissal of legislation, but Democrats in the Senate Wednesday ignored his pleas and rejected his veto. One Senate Republican voted with Democrats on the override. Sen. Sam McCann, of Carlinville, voted against the party line and in favor of the override.

Rauner said earlier Wednesday that if Senate President John Cullerton were to override his veto of the AFSCME no strike bill it would essentially prove he is House Speaker Michael Madigan’s puppet.

The measure now goes to the Illinois House, where it faces a less certain future.
