CENTRALIA — Police Chief Doug Krutsinger has released some details in a Sunday night shooting incident that has left one man dead.

shooting mapKrutsinger says a man ran up to employees of Fireside House on Martin Luther King Drive Sunday night, telling them he had been shot. He was taken to St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

While being interviewed by police, the injured man told police he believed his friend had also been shot at, and officers began a search between MLK and Cormick for a second victim. That victim, believed to be a 24-year-old Centralia man, wasn’t found until Monday morning in an alley between Sadler Place and Haussler Street, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled for tonight in Belleville.

Authorities are not releasing the identities of the two men at this time, and the case has been handed over to the Illinois State Police for investigation, with one Centralia police officer assigned to the case.

Krutsinger says the incident is not random at all, explaining that it’s the same basic group of individuals targeting each other and that drugs are the likely reason.

He’s unsure at this time, however, if Sunday’s shooting is related to a Friday shootout on the south side of the city. He does ask anyone with information about these incidents to contact law enforcement. You can share your information anonymously by calling 1-800-499-UTEL(8835), or through online message on the city’s website at cityofcentralia.org.
