CENTRALIA — Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon says an autopsy performed Monday evening in Belleville confirms a 24-year-old Irvington man discovered deceased in a neighborhood alleyway in Centralia’s northeast side Monday morning died from injuries from a gunshot wound.

Coroner Cannon pronounced Dustin Rhynes deceased just before 8 a.m. Monday morning. Preliminary examination indicated Rhynes died several hours prior to discovery of his body.

A man who was with Rynes at the time of the shooting was also shot, but managed to run from the scene and seek help at Fireside Nursing Home where employees called for an ambulance that took him to St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

According to Centralia Police Chief Doug Krutsinger, the injured man was shot in the side. Authorities are not yet releasing his identity.

Centralia Police, Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigations, and the Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the Rhynes death.

Moran Queen-Boggs Funeral Home in Centralia is in charge of arrangements for Rhynes. His obituary can be found on our Obits page.
