EFFINGHAM — Authorities have identified a young woman found dead Tuesday in an Effingham apartment as a 17-year-old Effingham teen, who was originally from Vandalia.
Effingham County Coroner Duane Guffey says Shelby M. Wheatley was pronounced dead at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday.
While an autopsy was performed, final results won’t be available for 4 to 6 weeks, said Guffey, noting there were no obvious signs of trauma or injury.
An investigation into Wheatley’s death continues by the Effingham County Coroner’s office, Effingham City Police and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services.
According to a press release, Effingham Police responded to the apartment in the 700 block of North Third Street at 7:57 a.m. Tuesday and found the Wheatley unresponsive.
