MARION COUNTY — Gov. Bruce Rauner has signed a bill into law that according to Marion County Supervisor of Assessments Patty Brough, will expand the scope of the Disabled Veterans Standard Homestead Exemption.

According to Brough, if the qualifying veteran has a service connected disability of 30 percent or more, but less than 50 percent, the annual exemption is $2,500, that’s up from zero.

Also, if the qualifying veteran has a service connected disability of 50 percent or more, but less than 70 percent, the annual exemption has doubled, from $2,500 to $5,000.

Finally, if the veteran has a service connected disability of 70 percent or more, then the property is exempt from taxation for homes, with an assessed value of less than $250,000. Previously that exemption was only $5,000.
