SWANSEA, Ill. (AP) — A 38-year-old East St. Louis man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a stabbing that left his ex-girlfriend dead and her 9-year-old son severely injured.
St. Clair County prosecutors on Monday charged Alvin Harris Jr. with killing 38-year-old Sharetta Day. He was also charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery to a child.
The boy was stabbed three times in the neck and reportedly witnessed his mother’s attack. He’s recovering at a St. Louis area hospital.
Day was found lying on the ground of her Swansea apartment complex Saturday evening. Police say she and Harris were briefly in a relationship that Day had tried to end.
Bond for Harris was set at $1 million. Online court records have yet to list legal representation for Harris.
