SOUTH/CENTRAL, Ill. — Coroners around the region are warning of a potentially lethal batch of heroin circulating through central and southern Illinois, pointing to as many as four possible fatalities and an unknown number of overdoses from the batch.

It’s unclear at this time due to pending toxicology results, whether this is an extremely pure batch of heroin or if it has been mixed with another potent drug such as Fentanyl.

Heroin users often use approximately the same dose each time they use, so if this is a more pure type, the first dose could be lethal.

People should also be aware that Illinois’ Good Samaritan Law gives anyone calling 911 in good faith is given immunity from criminal charges for drug possession, and the overdose victim being helped has immunity, as well.
