Marion County — Current Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon has announced that after considerable reflection, discussion, and prayer, he has decided to seek another term as your Coroner.

Cannon says he’s worn a uniform and/or badge since 1981. He’s served in the Coroner’s Office since 2000, and for twenty years in local law enforcement, five years as an Investigator for the DHS Office of Inspector General, two years in Ramadi, Iraq as an International Police Advisor and Camp Commander. He retired from the United States Air Force and Illinois Air National Guard.

Cannon holds numerous certifications in the world of death investigations, including a Master’s Certificate from St. Louis University School of Medicine in Medicolegal Death Investigations and am a member of the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators. He’s also a member of the Illinois Coroners and Medical Examiners Association, as well as the International Coroners and Medical Examiners Association.

He says, most importantly, he feels he’s done a good job as Coroner, and wants to continue to serve in that capacity. He acknowledges his office has been challenged over the past three years, and particularly this past year, but his team has continually risen to the challenge.

Cannon says they’ve adapted, adjusted, and reached out for resources they’ve never had a need for. He notes the technical and legal aspects of coroner service continues to become more complex and complicated, but his team’s professionalism and diversity keeps them at the cutting edge.

They’ve developed new programs, protocols, and procedures, says Cannon, in order to better serve in today’s world, and they are looking forward to enhancing and fine-tuning those services over the next term.
