MARION COUNTY — According to Illinois State Police, a Monday morning accident on Interstate 57 north of Salem sent two Chicago residents to the hospital.
Just before noon Monday, a black 2009 Toyota driven by 33-year-old Molly Merrill, of Chicago, encountered tire debris in the left lane of the interstate, as she was driving northbound near milemarker 124.
Merrill swerved to the right to avoid the debris and lost control of her vehicle.
The vehicle then traveled across the right lane and onto the shoulder, striking a guardrail and rolling over while travelling down an embankment.
The car came to rest approximately 100 feet east of the roadway.
A passenger in the vehicle, an 8-year-old male from Chicago whose name was not released, as well as Merrill, were transported by ambulance from the scene to Salem Township Hospital. Another passenger, 36-year-old Alberto Martinez,also of Chicago, was reportedly uninjured. No citations were issued.
