MARION COUNTY — Bail has been set at $10,000 for a 25-year-old Centralia man accused of accidentally firing a sawed off shotgun through his neighbors house.

Centralia police arrested Steven Cummins of Patterson Street on Monday, he was formally charged this morning in Marion County Court with Class 4 felony reckless discharge of a firearm, endangering others, and misdemeanor possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card.

Police say Cummins, fearing recent violence in Centralia, borrowed a sawed off shotgun to see if he wanted to buy it, but the gun accidentally discharged, traveled through an outside closet and struck his neighbor’s home.

While no one was in the home in the 1200 block of North Sycamore, the mobile home was sprayed with buckshot that wasn’t noticed by the residents until the next day, when they found buckshot embedded in their refrigerator door, and contacted police.

A closer look revealed the shot had also hit other areas around the home. Following the trail of buckshot, police tracked it to the home and room where Patterson was staying.

He told told police the gun had a ‘hair trigger’ and he was unaware the bullets had struck his neighbor’s home.
