JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 26-year-old Chicago man has been charged in Jefferson County Court with aggravated residential arson, in connection with a June 28th fire in Mt. Vernon that left 47-year-old Tamara Malin dead.

On July 1st, 2015 detectives from the Mt Vernon Police Department arrested Steven Murphy on a charge of Obstructing Justice for providing false information related to the investigation.

Murphy has remained in the Jefferson County jail with bail set at $50,000. Today, Murphy has additionally been charged with Aggravated Arson and Residential Arson related to the investigation.

The previous Obstructing Justice charge was dismissed, and he remains in the Jefferson County Jail, with bail on the new arson-related charges set at $250,000.

On July 8th, 2015 detectives from the Mt Vernon Police Department arrested 25-year-old Mt Vernon resident Lindsey Payne-Favors on a charge of Obstructing Justice for providing false information related to the investigation. Payne-Favors was released from the Jefferson County Jail after posting $2,500 cash bond.

Additional charges from this investigation are under review by the Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s office.
