JEFFERSON COUNTY — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is reporting deputies arrested a man this afternoon; after they responded to a report of a female screaming she was being raped.

ThinkstockPhotos-186017556According to the sheriff’s department, around 11:48 today, deputies responded to an area of the old abandoned Dix Lumberyard, where they learned that a black male had attacked the female and threatened her with a gun.

The female told deputies that the suspect fled the area on foot. Due to the close proximity to Rome Grade School, the school was placed on lockdown.

Deputies, detectives, Mt. Vernon police, and Illinois State Police officers quickly arrived on scene and were able to apprehend the subject.

The subject reportedly fought with deputies but was ultimately taken into custody. The subject was transported to the Jefferson County Jail, the exact charges are pending interviews.

Sheriff Travis Allen tanked Rome School for quickly locking down the school to ensure the safety of the children. He also thanked the Mt. Vernon Police Department and ISP for helping, noting Mt. Vernon’s quick response and eagerness to help really displayed their commitment to the safety and well being of the residents of Jefferson County.
