MARION COUNTY — Charges have been dropped against a 32-year-old DuQuoin man arrested over the weekend in connection with a Friday afternoon burglary in Centralia, while a 26-year-old female arrested over the same incident is now facing a Class 1 felony charge.

William Swofford was released Monday from the Marion County Jail, while Billie Melton has been charged with Class 1 felony residential burglary for an alleged burglary to a home in the 1300 block of South Elm Street in Centralia.

The home owner and a friend had returned to the home on lunch break Friday. The homeowner thought the home may had been entered, and had his friend wait at the front door while he entered through the back door.

The homeowner identified Melton as the woman who ran from the front door as he entered the rear of the home. The homeowner informed police that Melton jumped into a car and sped away.

After questioning Melton Saturday, officers learned Swofford had driven her to the Elm Street home and waited outside for her. Charges against Swofford were dismissed this morning and he was released from custody. Melton was charged and remains in the Marion County Jail with bail set at $25,000.

A pair of headphones, and iPod, and an iPhone were reportedly taken from the home.
