SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Environmental groups say the state budget standoff could lead to more trash in Illinois dumps.

The Illinois Environmental Council wrote a message to its members saying possible layoffs of workers in statewide recycling programs could force cancellation of the programs. That’s according to a story this week by The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity oversees the programs. Gov. Bruce Rauner had announced layoffs and closures to keep spending in check until a budget is approved. But the layoffs are on hold until a judge considers arguments from labor unions. Three people running the programs were set to be laid off Oct. 1

The Republican governor and Democrat-controlled Legislature can’t agree on a budget for the July 1 fiscal year.
