BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — City staff in Bloomington plan to review concerns raised by an Illinois State University professor about the effect a new oil pipeline might have on the city’s water.

Industrial sociology professor William Rau told the City Council during Monday that he worries the Enbridge pipeline could leak where it crosses three creeks that contribute to the city’s water supply.

According to The Pantagraph, Assistant City Manager Steve Rasmussen said at a meeting Tuesday that city staff are looking at Rau’s concerns and talking to Enbridge about safeguards.

Rau said that because the pipeline will move 300,000 barrels of oil a day even a small leak could release 3,000 barrels a day.

Jennifer Smith is a spokeswoman for Enbridge. She said the Canadian company is checking on Rau’s concerns, too.

The pipeline will carry light crude from Flanagan, south to a hub in Patoka. It would cut through portions of Livingston, McLean, DeWitt, Macon, Shelby, Christian, Fayette and Marion counties.
