Sammy Kehrer has been held in the Jefferson County Jail for more than a year and a half, since his arrest for the involuntary manslaughter of 37-year-old Eric Houser, of Mt. Vernon.

Court documents say Kehrer stabbed Houser after the two men were involved in a fight outside the Mt. Vernon Fun and Sportsman’s Club in February 2014.

A packed courtroom watched as Kehrer received the maximum sentence Monday for involuntary manslaughter. He was initially charged with three counts First Degree Murder; however, one of the counts was dismissed in September 2014.

After a two-day trial in August was handed to them, the Jefferson county jury was given four possible verdicts, which included guilty of First Degree murder, guilty of Second Degree murder, guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter or not guilty. The found Kehrer guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter, and he was sentenced Tuesday.

Kehrer will also receive credit for time served in the county jail.
