Carl Sprague was transported to Fayette County Hospital for treatment of injuries that have been described as critical.

Police say they received a report around 4:08 Sunday morning that a pedestrian had been struck by a train under the Third and Main Street overpass.

The Vandalia Police Department, Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies, Fayette County Ambulance and Vandalia Fire Department responded to the scene.

The accident occurred just blocks away from another train crash that killed four people in October. A woman and three children died when their SUV was hit by a freight train on the day before Halloween.

And in March a 71-year-old man was struck and killed by a train while he was standing on the tracks a few blocks from that scene.
