ODIN — John Allen Barnes Jr., 77, of Odin, passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at SSM. Health Good Samaritan in Mt. Vernon. He was born the son of John A. Barnes Sr. “Joby” and Minnie Lee West in Ripley, Tennessee on January 4, 1938.
He married Shirley Barnes on March 17, 1956 in Centralia, and later divorced. To this union five daughters were born. She preceded him in death in 2001. He married Margie Buckly, and she preceded him in death.
Survivors include five daughters Chanda Thomas of Centralia, Moneta Williams and husband Levi Jr. of Centralia, Trudy Bailey of Centralia, L.A. Bailey of Minerville, Pa., Rosemary Barnes of Centralia, and Carmellia J. Barnes of Centralia; brother Bernard Barnes of Chicago; aunt Tenney Sue Harris of Milwakee, Wisc.; best friends Fred Hill, Melinda Shumaker, and Goldi Hull; 16 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his two spouses Shirley and Margie, he was preceded in death by both his parents; one brother Hector Barnes; one sister Brenda Burris; and four grandchildren.
Mr. Barnes enjoyed serving his community. He loved watching Westerns. He enjoyed working on cars, farming, and working outdoors. He loved his horses especially his horse “Foxy Lady”. He was Deputy Sheriff for 30 years. He was also supervisor at General Motors for 35 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and being a father.
Services for Mr. Barnes will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Second Baptist Church in Centralia. Burial will follow at Peaceful Valley Cemetery in Odin. Rev. Isaac Parker and Rev. Val Powe will officiate.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m -1 p.m. prior to the services at Second Baptist Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family’s wishes. Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia is in charge of arrangements.
