Three injured in fiery Sunday crash in Wayne County

WAYNE COUNTY — Three people from Illinois were injured in Wayne County on Sunday morning after the car they were in flipped over and caught fire.

According to the investigation, 47-year-old Robert L. Meek, of Pana, was driving westbound around 11:09 a.m., on Interstate 64 near mile post 97 in rural Wayne County when his vehicle left the road and drove into the median.

Once in the median, his vehicle struck an embankment, causing it to become airborne. When the vehicle hit the ground, it overturned, and came to rest on its tires before catching fire.

Meek, along with two passengers, 43-year-old Jeremy D. Keller,  and 36-year-old Tonya M. Keller, also of Pana, were able to escape the burning vehicle.

Meek was transported to an area hospital by the Wayne City Ambulance Service, while Jeremy Keller was taken to an area hospital by the Wayne County Ambulance Service.

Tonya Keller was airlifted from the crash scene to an Evansville, Indiana, hospital.

The vehicle had to be towed from the crash scene.

Illinois State Police District 19 was assisted at the crash scene by the Wayne City Fire Department, Wayne City Ambulance Service, Wayne County Ambulance Service, Air Evac, and Rick’s Towing.
