MADISON COUNTY — A 31-year-old Alton woman is facing felony charges after she allegedly used a taser on a police officer while being arrested.

Marquita A. Darris was reportedly stopped by a Madison County sheriff’s deputy Sunday afternoon, after she allegedly drove through a stop sign according to reports.

Deputies say Darris gave a false name to the deputy, and there were several outstanding traffic warrants against her. The deputy realized it was a false name, and attempted to arrest her on the warrants and driving on a suspended license.

According to the Belleville News-Democrat, Darris told the deputy she could not go to jail and resisted arrest, swinging her arm at him. He attempted to use a taser, but Darris continued to struggle as two bystanders attempted to aid the deputy.

At that point, Darris was able to grab the taser and used it on the deputy, according to police. The deputy then ordered the bystanders to withdraw, and drew his service weapon, ordering Darris to drop the taser. Darris subsequently complied, and remained still on the ground until additional officers arrived, according to police.

The deputy and Darris both sustained minor cuts and bruises, according to Capt. Mike Dixon of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. The bystanders were uninjured.

Darris has been charged with felony aggravated battery of a police officer, disarming a police officer and resisting a police officer, as well as misdemeanor charges of obstructing identification, obstructing a police officer, resisting a police officer, possession of less than 2.5g cannabis and traffic citations for driving on a suspended license, driving an uninsured vehicle and disobeying a stop sign.

A 25-year-old passenger in the car — Michelle L. Corrigan, of Cottage Hills — has been charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of cannabis. Police said she was in possession of suspected alprazolam, hydrocodone and methamphetamine as well as less than 2.5g of cannabis.

Both women remain in custody at the Madison County Jail. Darris’ bail is set at $100,000 and Corrigan’s at $30,000.
