MARION COUNTY — Bail has been set at $50,000 for a 42-year-old Salem woman who has been charged in Marion County Court with possession of narcotics, following an operation conducted this spring by sheriff’s investigators with the help of Centralia police.

Jean Smith, also known as Jean Thomas, was arrested after investigators with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department received a warrant for Smith’s arrest based upon several controlled buys of heroin from Smith this spring.

The investigation is ongoing, as investigators work to determine if anyone else was involved in the alleged sale of heroin.
Smith was formally charged in court Monday with Class 2 felony possession of narcotics. If convicted she could face between 3 and 7 years in prison.

She was appointed a public defender to represent her in court. She is next scheduled to appear in court November 17 for a preliminary hearing.
