ARCOLA, Ill. (AP) — A portion of a roadway in central Illinois has been redesignated in honor of seven local brothers who fought in World War II.

The Mattoon Journal-Gazette reports that about 120 members of the family attended a ceremony Sunday at the Arcola Fire Department to commemorate the recent renaming of Illinois Route 133 through Douglas County as “the Ghere Brothers

Memorial Highway.” Republican state Sen. Chapin Rose of Mahomet presented a replica of the road marker to Dan Ghere, whose father, Bobby, was killed in WWII.

The seven brothers, who grew up in a family of 17 children in Arcola, are considered important figures in the city’s history.
Six of the brothers, all but Bobby Ghere, returned from WWII and resettled in the Arcola area.
