MOUNT VERNON — Two Mt. Vernon juvenile males have been arrested in connection with a Monday night fire that destroyed a vacant Mt. Vernon home that spread to two others.
Firefighters reported around 7 p.m. Monday to the home in the 300 block of Jordan Street, and discovered the home fully engulfed in flames and the roof of the structure ready to collapse. They remained on the scene until midnight.
The heat from the flames caught the side of a nearby house trailer on fire, causing significant heat and smoke damage to that structure.
The heat from the fire also melted the headlights of a car parked outside the home and melted the west side of another neighboring home, flames ultimately spread to the attic of that home before firefighters were able to knock them down.
No one was home at that residence when the fire broke out, and the occupants of the other home were able to escape without injury.
An investigation by the Mt. Vernon Police Department into the fire led to the arrests of the 15 and 17 year-old suspects, who had been seen in the area before the fire.
