SPRINGFIELD — The State of Illinois has received new utility disconnect services, not from the City of Marshall, this time from an electric cooperative in our listening area.

Headquartered in Greenville, Southwestern Electric Cooperative serves nearly 23,000 residential, commercial, agricultural and industrial member accounts in parts of Bond, Clay, Clinton, Fayette, Effingham, Macoupin, Madison, Marion, Montgomery, Shelby and St. Clair Counties.

On October 29 the state received a notice from the cooperative regarding 70 of its accounts that are overdue.

The notice says the accounts are in arrears and are subject to disconnection of service. It notes the cooperative is a not-for-profit utility that relies on its members to pay their bill, so they in turn can pay their bills and provide power to homes, hospitals, schools, businesses, and industries throughout the State of Illinois.

The state’s violation of their service agreement, says the notice, compromises their ability to provide that service, and jeopardizes the welfare of their membership and the general public.

In keeping with their commitment to community service, they say they have far exceeded their disconnection for non-payment polices, with some of the state’s accounts being subject to disconnection as much as 4-months ago – well before the July 1 start of the budget impasse.

The letter serves as the final notice for the state before disconnection of service if payment is not received by December 1, 2015. Information indicates traffic signals, roadway lighting, pump stations, rest areas and IDOT maintenance yards are affected.
