MARION COUNTY — A 53-year-old Chicago man was sentenced today in Marion County Court to 5-years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, after he was earlier found guilty of a 2013 charge of selling heroin.

Anthony Thurman was originally arrested in February 2013 and charged with Class 1 felony manufacture with the intent to deliver between 1-15 grams of heroin. Bail was set at $100,000 and he quickly posted $10,000 bond and was released.

Soon after he was released on bond, Thurman’s bail was increased by an additional $15,000 due to a bond violation, and he quickly posted the additional $1,500 bond and was again released.

Days later another bond violation resulted in his bail being increased by an additional $30,000, and $3,000 cash bond was quickly posted and he was again released.

The case proceeded through the court until June of this year when Thurman failed to appear for a bench trial. A warrant was issued for his arrest and wasn’t served until August when he was located and arrested in Cook County, where he posted another $5,000 cash bond.

Thurman finally appeared for a September bench trial, where Judge Mark Stedelin ultimately found him guilty of the charge against him, and the case was set for sentencing.

Stedelin denied Thurman’s request to vacate the guilty judgment, and proceeded with sentencing that included 5-years in prison, 2-years parole and $5,000 in fines plus court costs, with bail applied. The nearly $15,000 in bond money remaining will be returned to the bond assignees.
