CHICAGO (AP) — University of Illinois President Timothy Killeen would like to freeze tuition for in-state students at current levels but he isn’t sure if that is possible.
Killeen told The News-Gazette in Champaign that “we need to restrain any tuition growth for Illinois residents.” But whether that happens will depend on the state budget.
Schools and other state-funded institutions are waiting to find out how much money they will have for the fiscal year that started July 1. But Gov. Bruce Rauner and lawmakers have yet to agree on a budget.
University of Illinois trustees on Thursday passed a resolution urging them to act.
In-state students who started this fall pay $12,036 a year in tuition at the Urbana-Champaign campus. They pay $10,584 at the Chicago campus and $9,405 in Springfield.
