CHICAGO (AP) — The mother of a transgender student says her daughter is devastated after being banned from a suburban Chicago girls’ locker room.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the mother’s comments were published on the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois’ website.

The ACLU represents the student in a federal complaint filed against the Palatine school district after she was denied unrestricted locker room access. Last week, federal officials found the district violated the student’s rights under Title IX.

The student’s name hasn’t been released.

The mother’s name wasn’t published with her essay. She writes her daughter was “inconsolable” at times.

District officials say they made reasonable accommodations for the student, who was born male.
