MASCOUTAH, Ill. (AP) — Police in southwestern Illinois are investigating the shooting of a Mascoutah homeowner during an apparent burglary that took place on the transplanted Texan’s first night in his new home.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports the 51-year-old man was recovering at a St. Louis hospital after he was shot in the chest early Saturday. The unidentified victim had just moved to the area with his wife, a Scott Air Force Base chaplain.

Mascoutah Police Chief Bruce Fleshren says the home appeared to be unoccupied, which might have led to the burglary attempt.

Community volunteers are delivering meals to the man’s wife and two sons. Others have helped set furniture in the family’s rented home.
