PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — A medical school professor in Peoria will continue his research into Alzheimer’s Disease thanks to a $440,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports that Dr. Ken Fukuchi has spent 30 years researching the disease.

Fukuchi is a professor in the department of cancer biology and pharmacology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria.

The grant will support another two years of research. Fukuchi is examining a theory that a type of immune cell in the brain can prevent the accumulation of an abnormal protein that is often found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.
