BENTON, Ill. (AP) — A log cabin that served as a popular gathering spot for generations of southern Illinois teens is likely headed for the scrap heap.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports that Benton city officials expect to tear down Scout Cabin rather than invest an estimated $75,000 to $100,000 in needed repairs.

Robert Rea of the Franklin County Historical Society calls the cabin, which was built in 1937, “a central piece of our Benton story.”

The city installed a new roof and upgraded the cabin’s heating and air conditioning systems several years ago. But Mayor Fred Kondritz says the more extensive work required is beyond what the city wants to get involved in.

He expects the City Council to soon vote to tear down the cabin.
