JEFFERSON COUNTY — After more than 30 years, a sign of Christmas spirit has returned to the grounds of the Jefferson County Courthouse.

Santa’s Cottage had become just a memory, but this year the donation of a cottage from Charlie Heck of Heck Excavating has brought that memory back to Jefferson County.

Lights and other holiday decorations at the courthouse were also donated, as well as fruit that was given to children visiting Santa’s Cottage on Saturday.

Sheriff Travis Allen says the cottage is bringing unity back to the community, and activity back to the downtown area of Mt. Vernon.

The grand opening for Santa’s Cottage was held Saturday, and the first 500 kids at the cottage received a toy from Santa.

The event was at no cost to families who attended. Santa and his helpers were all volunteers, and parents were allowed to take their own pictures of their children on Santa’s lap.

Santa’s Cottage will be open from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Jefferson County Courthouse and from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. Saturdays until Christmas day.
