CHICAGO (AP) — Funeral services are set for a Chicago firefighter who died after falling down an elevator shaft while battling a smoky blaze at a warehouse.

The Chicago Fire Department says visitation for 42-year-old Daniel Capuano is scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Rita High School chapel. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at the same chapel. He’ll be buried in suburban Alsip.

Capuano is survived by his wife and three children.

The 15-year department veteran fell down an elevator shaft Monday as he searched for people and the source of the fire at the vacant warehouse on Chicago’s South Side. He was pronounced dead two hours later at a hospital.

Officials with the city’s Building Department say the removal of the elevator at the warehouse was underway without authorization.
