CHICAGO (AP) — A post office in Chicago has been renamed in honor of a firefighter who was killed in November 2012 while battling flames in the attic of a two-story home.
The family of Capt. Herbie Johnson, local officials and representatives from the Chicago Fire Department and U.S. Postal Service gathered Sunday afternoon for a ceremony to officially rename Chicago’s Mount Greenwood Post Office the Captain Herbert Johnson Memorial Post Office Building.
Johnson died Nov. 2, 2012, while responding to a fire in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. He was a 32-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department and served in almost every one of the city’s neighborhoods as a firefighter.
The name change was made possible by a bill authored by state Rep. Dan Lipinski.
