WALTONVILLE — Jefferson County Sherriff’s Department and Waltonville Fire-Rescue responded early Monday morning to the Big Muddy River on reports of a boat flipped over and people in the water.

According to reports, Devin Eubanks contacted authorities to advise them that his boat had flipped and his friend and he were stranded with one of them on top of the boat and another down the bank at the Waltonville Public Use Area off Illinois 148.

While in the process of rescuing those individuals, authorities also assisted four others who were on a hunting trip in a stalled boat on the lake.

All were successfully retrieved from the water without major reported injuries. One boat was left in the water with currents too strong to retrieve at the time of the rescue.
