ALTAMONT, Ill. (AP) — An Illinois high school wants to award diplomas to former students who were drafted into the military before they finished their educations.

The Effingham Daily News reports Altamont High School plans to honor the veterans. Officials posted the idea on the school’s Facebook page to a warm response.

Veterans are asked to contact Altamont High School Principal Jerry Tkachuk. The school plans to invite them to attend graduation ceremonies where they will receive diplomas.

Eligible veterans could have served in World War II, Korea or Vietnam — all wars that relied on the draft. The United States eliminated the draft in 1973 as it adopted an all-volunteer force.
