URBANA, Ill. (AP) — Authorities in Champaign County who say domestic violence cases often end up being dismissed after languishing in the legal system for too long say they are going to speed things up.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports that this year will see changes in the way felony domestic abuse cases are handled — starting with assigning all those cases to one felony prosecutor and one judge.

Officials are hopeful their effort will prevent some case dismissals that come after victims decide after waiting for weeks or months for trial that they no longer want to cooperate with prosecutors.

Lisa Little of a group called Courage Connection says speeding up the process will demonstrate to victims the courts are paying attention to their cases.
