MOUNT VERNON — A Saturday afternoon and traffic stop in Mt. Vernon resulted in a brief foot chase and arrest of a male juvenile who had reportedly been in possession of a loaded handgun.
Because the suspect is 16-year-old, police did not release his identity. However, police reports say officers attempted a traffic stop around 4:40 Saturday afternoon at 17th and Perkins in Mt. Vernon, with the male juvenile fleeing from the traffic stop on foot.
Police say that during the foot pursuit, the juvenile allegedly discarded a loaded handgun. Officers continued their pursuit of the juvenile as he busted out a window of a vacant home and and entered the residence. Officers then surrounded the home and took the juvenile into custody without further incident.
According to police, the juvenile is on parole through the Illinois Department of Corrections. He was taken into custody for alleged obstructing an officer, criminal damage to property, criminal trespassing to a residence and possession of a firearm by a felon. IDOC was notified of the arrest.
The juvenile was transported to the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center pending a court appearance in Jefferson County.
