DECATUR, Ill. (AP) — Volunteers in Decatur, Illinois have loaded trucks with bottled water to help residents of Flint, Michigan, where the water is contaminated with lead.

The Decatur Herald and Review reports volunteers plan to drive Saturday to Flint, where they have contacts who will help them

distribute the water.

Jacob Jenkins says he launched the project on social media and has been impressed with the response. Students at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville joined in. So did the Decatur public schools and the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.

Improperly treated water leached lead from pipes into drinking water after Flint switched from Detroit’s water system to the Flint River in 2014 to save money while under state financial management. Some children’s blood has tested positive for lead, which has been linked to learning problems.
