Police reports indicate the child in question is 3 1/2 months-old and was transported to the Fayette County Hospital for treatment.

We’re trying to confirm unofficial reports that say the baby was flown unresponsive from the Fayette County Hospital to a St. Louis area hospital with bleeding on his brain and was placed on life support.

The seriousness of the infant’s injuries, however, did result in the activation of the Illinois Child Death Task Force, which along with the Vandalia Police Department is actively investigating the incident.

Both agencies are working closely with the Fayette County State’s Attorney’s Office. Vandalia police say they are working diligently to collect as much factual information in the case as possible.

They note that as of Tuesday afternoon the baby was still hospitalized, and they will release additional information as it becomes available without jeopardizing the integrity of the investigation.
