CHICAGO (AP) — Top Illinois Democrats are supporting a plan for automatic voter registration, saying it’ll boost participation, save money and modernize systems.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and Illinois Senate President John Cullerton joined voter advocacy groups Friday in Chicago.

The proposal would automatically register qualified residents to vote when they apply for a driver’s license or other state ID unless they decline. Officials say they’re considering adding other state agencies where people apply for services.

Bill sponsor Sen. Andy Manar of Bunker Hill didn’t specify how much would be saved.

Opponents worry such changes could lead to automatically registering non-citizens and voter fraud. But proponents say an electronic process would help eliminate mistakes.

Oregon and California have similar laws.
