CARTERVILLE, Ill. — The state budget impasse has now struck dozens of tenured faculty and non-tenured faculty and staff members who will be losing their jobs at John A Logan College in Southern Illinois.

The 55 layoffs could be finalized at a 7 p.m. Wednesday special trustee meeting, according to the meeting’s agenda.

The specific faculty and staff received letters Monday telling them they will be recommended for dismissal at the special meeting.

The letter goes on to say that employees might be called back to their positions should the financial situation of the college improve.

College President Ronald House said in the notice the actions are “A direct result of the failure of the state of Illinois to pass a budget.”

House said the college is also cutting programs in preparation to go without state money from FY-2016 and much of FY-2017.
He said the dental hygiene program will be phased out at JALC, as well as the second year of the Cosmetology program, both of which he says have low enrollment.

House pointed out there is an opportunity for students taking only one year of cosmetology to leave with a certification, and all students in any affected programs currently will be able to graduate with their respective certificates, as well.

The state is now facing its ninth month without a budget.
