WHEATON, Ill. (AP) — A 52-year-old Chicago man has been found guilty of making threatening telephone calls to an Illinois state representative three years ago.

Stephen Bona was found guilty Thursday of two felony counts of threatening a public official. Authorities say Bona called the office of state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton on March 22, 2013 and left a threatening message and was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

The charges were upgraded the charges to threatening a public official when a second threatening phone call was received three days later.

Bona testified he never intended to harm Ives. The threats were made as lawmakers were debating whether to legalize same-sex marriage.

Bona faces up to five years in prison for each count when he is sentenced April 29.
