JEFFERSON COUNTY — The Illinois State Police is investigating an incident Sunday in Jefferson County in which a sheriff’s deputy fired upon a vehicle.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Travis Allen, the driver of a vehicle attempted to run over the deputy Sunday. While the deputy reportedly pulled his handgun and fired at the vehicle, he did not strike the subject. The subject was taken into custody.

It’s unclear if this incident is related to an incident Sunday involving Mt. Vernon police, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies, ISP and a helicopter.

That incident reportedly started in Mt Vernon and ended with a police chase and manhunt in the area south of Interstate-64.

Additional details are expected in a full press release Monday morning.
