MURPHYSBORO — State employees working in mental health, disability, child protection, and corrections positions, along with other state employees and their families who live in the 115th House District will be gathering today outside the Murphysboro office of their state representative.

According to a press release, the Family Action Day is planned for 4:30 this afternoon outside Republican State Rep. Terri Bryant’s office at 342 North Street in Murphysboro.

The press release notes that before becoming a state lawmaker, Bryant worked for the Illinois Department of Corrections in a job title then covered by the right to a fair arbitration process.

State employees plan to ask Bryant to ensure they have the same rights she had to fair treatment and a neutral arbitration process, to reconsider her position on the fair arbitration bill and to commit to override any veto of House Bill 580.

The measure gives all state employees the option of a neutral arbitrator to help settle contract agreement — the same process that is already available to correctional officers, fire fighters and other public safety personnel statewide.

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has promised to veto the bill.
