FAYETTE COUNTY — The 31-year-old semi-truck driver allegedly involved in a fatal Monday morning crash with a cyclist near St. Elmo has been identified.

Kevin Bagwill, of Godfrey, reportedly left the scene of the fatal crash that left 30-year-old Jason Hearty, of Altamont dead. Police later identified and located Bagwill who is now in custody of the Fayette County Jail. Bagwill has been charged with Failure to Report an Accident to Police and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Injury or Death.

Both Bagwill and Hearty were reportedly traveling westbound just before 6 a.m. Monday on U.S. Route 40 near St. Elmo. Hearty was riding his bicycle to work in St. Elmo and Bagwill was driving a semi-truck with a trailer when Bagwill reportedly struck Hearty from behind. Hearty was pronounced dead at the scene. Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen says he died instantly.

An autopsy was scheduled on Hearty Tuesday afternoon at St. Anthony in Effingham. Those results have not yet been made available.
