PALATINE, Ill. (AP) — A suburban Chicago community college has told 19 full-time and 10 part-time employees they’ll lose their jobs June 30.

Harper College in Palatine said Thursday it’s eliminating other positions through early retirement to eligible faculty members and other steps.

The college says it’s owed $8 million in state aid and $1.5 million in Monetary Award Program grants for low-income students.

Harper officials tell the Arlington Heights Daily Herald (http://bit.ly/1RAfMtK) the layoffs are expected to save $3.5 million. The college expects to save an additional $1.5 million by cutting costs.

Illinois’ public colleges and universities have not received any state funding since last summer because Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democrats who control the General Assembly are locked in a stalemate over how to address a massive spending deficit.
