CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is warning business owners that crooks posing as representatives from her office are trying to scam them.

Madigan said Tuesday that the scam involves trying to get business owners to download computer viruses or send money. Madigan says her office has received complaints. She says business owners are notified that complaints have been filed against their companies and are directed to a website or attachment for more information. The messages come via email or social media.

Madigan warns that clicking on the link could install malicious software called malware or viruses on computers or networks. She reminds business owners that her office never sends messages asking businesses to open a website or attachment to obtain more information.
