EFFINGHAM, Ill. (AP) — Two Illinois state troopers who were killed in the line of duty decades ago are being honored with new roadside memorial signs.

The Effingham Daily News reports two new signs along Interstate 57 will be dedicated Monday during a ceremony in downtown Effingham.

They’re a tribute to Troopers Layton Davis and Frank Doris.

Davis’ son, Alan, says the honor is “well past due” and the family is glad it’s happening.

Davis was shot to death during a traffic stop on Interstate 57 in 1976. Doris was shot and killed on U.S. 45 near Flora in 1967.

Effingham Sunrise Rotary Club members worked with area legislators to secure the memorials.

Family members of the fallen troopers will receive small replicas of the signs that have been placed on the interstate.
