WOODSTOCK, Ill. (AP) — A northeastern Illinois judge won’t reconsider the 10-year prison sentence she imposed on a man who admitted driving under the influence in a crash that left another man paralyzed.

McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather sentenced 25-year-old Ruben Zendejas in May after the Hoffman Estates man pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI.

Zendejas failed to stop for a red light in Crystal Lake in February 2015 and struck a car driven by a 23-year-old man who’s now paralyzed from the waist down.

Zendejas’s attorney argued that the 10-year sentence was excessive in light of his client’s potential for rehabilitation and lack of criminal background.

But The (Crystal Lake) Northwest Herald reports Prather said Friday she considered all factors in the sentencing, including Zendejas’ prior history with alcohol and drugs.
